Online Poker dos and don’ts

Instead of title above we might as well have said ‘some of the biggest mistakes online poker players make and ways to avoid them’. Online poker is a realm in which player mistakes abound. There are no doubts about it: this is the very thing that makes most online poker tables extremely profitable for good players.

The vast majority of online poker players are amateurs coming from all walks of life, without any poker education and often without any ambitions to acquire one in the future. Quite naturally, both the diversity and the number of mistakes these players make are outstanding. Let’s see some of the most common of them.

Jumping into a game without any game or table selection. All right, I’ll have to admit this is by far not the biggest mistake but it is definitely the most frequent one. Game selection not so much as table selection: when looking for a cash game, most players just jump into the action using the poker room’s software to locate a free spot at a table of a given limit.

Playing under-bankrolled. Now this is where things get serious. Most beginners haven’t a clue about the advantages a healthy stack offers them at the table. A large general poker stack is required to tide you through the ups and downs which are inevitable in Texas Holdem. Holdem is a game where Lady Luck has a pretty big word to say as far as short-term results are concerned. A good player will definitely be more successful over the long-run than a weak one, provided he has the ability to stick around long enough for his edges to start working.

On a more down-to-the-felt level, you need a big stack at the cash tables for several reasons: first of all, a deep stack allows you to play healthy tight aggressive poker aiming to exploit the implied odds.

When you do land a good hand, you need to be able to shove as much money into the pot as possible to take full advantage of your implied odds and to milk your opponents to their full potential. If you do not have money to put into the pot, you are going to lose value on your monster hands.

A deep stack is also a healthy deterrent especially in NL Holdem games.

What should you do to avoid being under bankrolled? Make a healthy deposit or if you cannot afford to do that, play at low and micro limits until you build up your bankroll.

Another one of the most common rookie mistakes is that they play way too many hands. Online poker is a fast paced game, where the number of hands played per hour is much bigger than at a live poker table. Playing too many hands under these circumstances has dire consequences for beginners’ bankrolls. The idea that they didn’t log in to sit around and watch others play probably has a lot to do with the hyper-activity of new players. Hand after hand they see the flop, sometimes even calling down a preflop raise to do so, in the hopes that they’ll be hit by something good. As one mistake usually gives birth to several others, they then go on and keep putting more money into the pot after the flop misses them, chasing after wild geese and squandering their bankrolls in the process.

Learn your starting hand selection properly. Also make sure you know why you’re supposed to play the recommended hands, because that will enable you to adapt your starting hand requirements to the various situations that arise during play.

Not signing up for a rakeback deal before starting a real money bankroll can also be qualified as a mistake. Rakeback gives you free money, without any sort of skill-related effort on your part. Passing on something like that can only be thought of a as a grievous mistake.
