...Online Poker Reviews and Strategies...

Choosing an online poker room

There are countless desperately sophomoric articles out there on this subject so I’ll aim to make this one at least a little informative for those of you who may be interested in what there is to know about choosing a poker room. The question of whether or not a poker room offers optimal value for their play doesn’t even cross the minds of about 99% of the rookies. They usually flock to the sites where the crowds are and which can afford to advertise on TV. They rush into signing up and only later realize they would’ve gotten a bigger bang for their buck at a different site.

The object of both poker and online poker is to make money, therefore, everything you do when choosing your poker room should be aimed at optimizing the value you get. Take a look around and read some of the poker room reviews so many affiliate poker sites offer. Many of these reviews are written by independent authors, so the facts presented in them are rather accurate. Study these reviews and learn to assess sign-up bonuses, loyalty schemes and promotions on your own.

Never go for the first poker room you hear of or for the biggest sign-up bonus offered. The question of whether or not a poker room is fair and trustworthy isn’t really an issue. Poker rooms are not casinos and they cannot win money from their patrons. Therefore it doesn’t pay for them to cheat. They make their money on the poker rake and for that they need their players to play as many hands as possible. In order to achieve that, they need to provide a safe and fair environment otherwise they’ll go out of business very fast. There have been cheating scandals (like the Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet ones) but those schemes seem to have been perpetrated by elements independent of the sites’ managements and they have all been discovered. Players who were deemed short-changed by these cheaters were all refunded too. With that in mind, the next thing you should direct your attention to is the sign-up bonus.

Mind you, the sums advertised as bonuses you’re entitled to receive upon sign-up are never actually accurate. They all represent a maximum you can get if you deposit the maximum amount of money. Almost every bonus is a percentage match on your first deposit, so if you make a small deposit, you get a small bonus and if you make a big deposit you get a big one.

None of the bonuses offered by the poker rooms are cashable as they are. They need to be unlocked or redeemed first, only then are they transferred into your real money account.

Every poker room has different standards in this respect. In order to unlock your bonus, you need to generate FPPs (Frequent Player Points) by playing real money hands at cash or tournament tables. The points you earn this way reflect the amount of rake you generate. The poker room will set how many such FPPs you need to unlock for every dollar of your bonus. If the requirements are too steep, you’ll never be able to unlock your bonus, regardless of how lavish it may have seemed.

Some poker rooms release your bonus in smaller batches, others will only transfer it in one lump sum after you’ve fulfilled the redemption requirements for the entire amount. Because there’s usually a validity term on your bonus, one lump sum bonuses will be much more difficult to get your hands on than those which are gradually transferred as you generate your FPPs.

Besides a generous bonus deal, a good poker room should also feature plenty of traffic, loose play and some sort of loyalty bonus like rakeback if possible. Rakeback is like a poker bonus deal which never expires and which keeps on generating money for the player who signed up for it for as long as he plays.
